Welcome to Year One with Mrs Shoesmith
Welcome to Class 4, Year One!
We hope you have had a lovely break. Below you will find all the information regarding what we will be learning in Spring Term One. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.
Dates for your diary
Parents evening - week of the 9th February (exact dates tbc)
Friday 13th February - end of half term (normal finish time of 3.30pm)
In English, we will read and share lots of new texts. Our focus text will be 'Nibbles the Book Monster' by Emma Yarlett. We will write simple sentences whilst ensuring we use capital letters, finger spaces and full stops and then look at writing instructions for looking after an animal. In phonics we will be learning new sounds and how to use sound buttons to identify the sounds that we know.
In Maths, children will continue to explore 2D and 3D shapes. They will build on their understanding of parts and wholes by combining them using addition, before applying this learning to understand the relationship between addition and subtraction. To develop secure understanding, children will explore numbers and equations using a range of representations and use these to solve problems. They will also continue to develop their oracy skills by explaining, reasoning, and justifying their thinking.
In Phonics, we will continue to use Little Wandle, as well as having our guided reading sessions.
In Reading, your child will be read with four times a week. They will focus on decoding, prosody and comprehension. Your child's reading book is matched appropriately to their phonics level.
Please aim to read with your child three times a week. This will support fluency, comprehension and expression.
In Handwriting, we will be looking at the correct formation of our letters and numbers. We will also be making our hand muscles nice and strong with our fine motor activities.
For this half term, our PE lessons will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays or Fridays (weather depending). Please make sure your child has their PE kit in school so they can get changed, as this helps to support their independence with dressing.
Please see our Spring One Curriculum map which has all the information about what we will be learning this term.
Your child’s well-being and education are very important to me. If you would like to talk, please come and see me at the end of the school day or send me an email.:

How you can help:
Please encourage your child to read their Collins E-book three times a week at home as well as completing their homework (which will be sent out after October half term). New log-ins and passwords will be provided for the Collins Hub on the welcome meeting on the 8th September and in the back of children's reading diaries. For a parent user guide to the Collins Hub click here.
