SPRING TERM - 2ND HALF

In English, the children will continue to answer the following question, ‘Can I write instructions to look after a mythical beast?’ We will bridge back to what we learnt about the Ancient Greeks in the autumn term to help us to do this. Afterwards, the children will write a mythical narrative. They will continue to learn spelling, punctuation and grammar skills each week, as well as participating in shared reading sessions, where we will be concentrating on vocabulary, inference, prediction, explanation, retrieval and summarising. Children will regularly practise their handwriting, in order to be able to express themselves more easily and more quickly. We would like to encourage you to hear your child read at least three times per week and record reading in your child's reading diary.

In maths, the children will be continuing their work on multiplication facts. They will be studying and representing different multiplication structures, applying the distributive law to multiplication and looking at what happens when a number is multiplied or divided by 10 and 100. In addition, the children will practise mental methods for solving problems. Practice and recall of multiplication facts will be a focus throughout the year, the aim being for the children to know all the multiplication facts up to 12x12. Key words include: factor, product and commutative.

In science, the children will learn about living things and their habitats. They will understand how to group living things in different ways, explore and use classification keys and recognise that environments can change and pose dangers. Key words include: migrate, hibernate, deforestation and classification.

In history this half term, the children will be exploring the question, ‘How powerful was the Roman army?’ They will learn that the Romans fought the Celts and consider what it would have been like to be a Roman soldier. They will examine the reasons for the first Roman invasion in 55BC and why the Romans built new roads and towns. They will find out about Boudicca, the Celtic queen who rebelled against the Romans in 60AD, and why she was unsuccessful. Finally, they will learn about Hadrian's Wall and why it was built in 122AD. Key words include: centurion, amphitheatre, chronology and archaeologist.

Please note that Class 10 will have outdoor PE on Tuesdays and indoor PE on Wednesdays.

WHO IS OUR STAR OF THE WEEK?

Every week, a new 'Star of the Week' will be chosen. This will be someone who has impressed Mr Hughes or one of the other adults who work with Class 10. Their picture will appear here and then below in the gallery for the rest of the year. The 'Star of the Week' is allowed to choose the register language for the following week.

w/c 3-3-25: Congratulations to AH, our new Star of the Week! She was chosen for working hard to continually improve her reading fluency this term. What a fantastic role model!

WHO IS THE DAILY GREETER?

In Class 10, we always try to start the day in a friendly and positive way. Every morning, a different child greets the class when they come into the classroom. Children can choose from a handshake, a high five or a fist bump.

WHAT IS READING FOR PLEASURE (RfP)?

Every week, Class 10 enjoys Reading for Pleasure (or RfP). Children are allowed to sit wherever they like - including under tables, on top of tables and even on Mr Hughes' chair - and either read to themselves or each other. They are encouraged to talk about their book choices and make recommendations.

At home, please read with your child at home every day and record this in their reading record. Here are some titles you might like to try...
